In Germany, AG1 costs 87 euros a month on subscription. That's over 1,000 euros a year for a powder you drink in 30 seconds. No wonder many people are looking for an alternative.

But "alternative" can mean many things: the same concept for less, a more open formula, a better taste or no powder at all. Here you'll find the prices, the differences between the concepts and the questions worth answering before you switch.

What AG1 Is and What It Costs

AG1 was formerly called Athletic Greens and was founded in 2010. The product is a daily powder with around 75 ingredients according to the manufacturer, including vitamins, minerals, plant compounds and bacterial cultures. The brand became known mainly through podcast advertising, and according to Wikipedia its 2024 revenue was around 600 million US dollars.

The official price in Germany is 87 euros a month on subscription and 107 euros for a single purchase of 30 servings. That works out at about 2.90 euros a day on subscription and 3.57 euros for a single purchase. The manufacturer justifies the price with its formula and quality testing.

Whether it's worth it for you depends less on the powder than on what you'd otherwise buy with the money. Someone who takes five separate supplements does the maths differently from someone who took nothing before.

Why People Look for an Alternative

Four reasons come up again and again.

Price. This is the most common reason. Over a year, a subscription comes to 1,044 euros and single purchases to 1,284 euros.

Transparency. Critics have pointed out that a significant share of AG1's dosages were not listed individually because the blends are treated as proprietary. Check the current label, as the formula has since been revised.

Evidence. According to Wikipedia, Harvard researcher JoAnn Manson criticised the company's studies as very small randomised trials lacking rigour. This isn't unique to AG1: other manufacturers also rely on small or internal studies.

Taste and tolerance. Some people don't get on with the taste or the sweetener, and others tolerate fibre and cultures poorly. The only way to find out is to try.

BIOGENA ONE: Similar Price, Different Origin

BIOGENA ONE comes from Salzburg and is in the same price bracket as AG1. On the Flex subscription it costs 82.60 euros instead of 118 euros, slightly less than AG1 on subscription. The nutrition table lists amounts for many ingredients individually, including 5 billion CFU of cultures per sachet. The manufacturer cites a four-week internal study in which participants reported subjective improvements. This has not been independently verified.

Two things to know: with 50 µg of vitamin D and 320 mg of vitamin C per sachet, the product exceeds the proposed maximums of 20 µg and 250 mg from Germany's BfR. If you also take vitamin D, factor that in. It also isn't a budget option: if paying less is the main goal, the other products are a better place to look. More in our article on BIOGENA ONE.

Alpha Foods Grüne Mutter: Close to the Concept, Much Cheaper

With 72 plant ingredients and 13 bacterial strains, Grüne Mutter comes quite close to the AG1 principle at about two euros per serving. The daily serving is comparatively large at 30 grams and is sweetened with stevia. With a serving this size, check which ingredients make up most of it, since the order on the label follows weight.

KoRo X44: Unsweetened, With More Substance

KoRo offers a large unsweetened pack and adds protein and fibre. That appeals to anyone who dislikes artificial-tasting sweetness. Pay attention to the iodine information if you already supplement iodine.

Primal Harvest Greens: Ferments Instead of a Vitamin Package

This product relies on fermented extracts and enzymes and costs considerably less than AG1. It aims more at plant variety than high vitamin amounts. Whether fermentation in a powder brings a measurable advantage is an open question, so treat it as a matter of taste and concept rather than a proven benefit.

Fairnatural Green Soul: The Simple Organic Option

With 16 organic ingredients at around 60 cents per serving, this is the cheapest option in this overview. It doesn't replace a multivitamin, but the ingredient list stays easy to read. If you only want to add something green, you may not need more.

No Powder: Single Nutrients and Food

Perhaps the most honest alternative is no all-in-one product at all. Get a blood test and add only what's really missing, often vitamin D in winter or omega-3 if you eat little fish. This often costs less and avoids overlap. Our comparison of the types of magnesium shows which form is discussed for what. The downside is that you have to manage it yourself and keep several tubs in the cupboard.

What Research Says About These Powders

Before switching, it helps to know how big the likely benefit is in the first place. In 2022 the US Preventive Services Task Force found the evidence insufficient to assess multivitamins for preventing cardiovascular disease or cancer, and recommended against beta carotene and vitamin E for this purpose (JAMA 2022).

The COSMOS-Web trial was somewhat more positive: a standard multivitamin improved the primary memory test in 3,562 older adults (Am J Clin Nutr 2023). It also shows that the product tested was a simple multivitamin that costs far less than AG1.

On bacterial cultures, a study in Cell shows that they colonise very differently from person to person. Many strains on a label therefore don't guarantee a particular effect. Our gut health guide gives an overview.

In short, there are no robust data showing one of these powders is clearly superior to another. That makes the decision simpler: price, label and tolerance can tip the balance.

How to Work Out the Real Cost

Price per serving is the simplest comparison, but not the only one. Three calculations keep you from being guided by the advertising.

First, calculate the year. AG1 costs 1,044 euros a year on subscription, BIOGENA ONE around 991 euros on the Flex subscription, Grüne Mutter around 726 euros and a simple organic green powder around 226 euros. The gap between concepts is bigger than the gap between two all-in-one brands.

Second, subtract what you replace. If you currently take a multivitamin, a probiotic and vitamin D, an all-in-one drink may save you those costs. Check whether the amounts really compare, though. A combined product contains less of some substances than a single supplement, for example magnesium, whose daily amount simply takes up a lot of space.

Third, include the start-up cost. Starter packs with a bottle or box are often priced differently from later deliveries. For BIOGENA ONE, the Starter Bundle without a subscription costs 129 euros. Also check whether there's a money-back guarantee for first-time buyers and how long it runs.

Five Questions Before You Switch

  1. What should the product do? Fill gaps, replace single supplements or just add some plant variety?
  2. What are you already taking? Put the labels side by side and add up vitamin D, vitamin A, zinc and selenium.
  3. What does it really cost? Compare price per serving, serving size and subscription term.
  4. Can you end the subscription? Check the notice period, pause option and money-back terms.
  5. Does it suit your health? If you take blood thinners, are pregnant, have a thyroid condition or smoke, talk to your doctor first.

Our Take

There is no objectively best AG1 alternative. If you want the same concept with listed amounts, look at BIOGENA ONE, but expect to pay a similar price. If you want to save, you'll find similar concepts from around 2 euros or simple green powders from 60 cents. And if you supplement based on a blood test, you may not need a blend at all.
